In response to the rapidly expanding world of e-commerce, major credit card providers including VISA and MasterCard have banded together to develop a set of standards designed to protect consumer cardholder information when interacting online with banks and/or merchant service providers.

PCI (Payment Card Industry) Compliance involves adhering to the established security standards put forward by the industry, which since June 2005, have included a quarterly network scan and an annual compliance questionnaire to be completed by all online merchants. For those newly applying for a merchant account, similar documentation is required to demonstrate compliance.
